A strong sense of unfulfillment can arise in us as believers when we choose to worship spiritual gifts instead of the Gift Giver. Perhaps not from the get-go, but as time goes by, it would very quickly be evident that placing our devotion on the gifts rather than the One who gives them to us is unsustainable. That’s not what we’re made for.
Our True Purpose
Scripture reminds us that we are created to bring glory to God, not to the abilities He imparts to us. Isaiah 43:21 declares, “The people whom I formed for myself will declare my praise.” This verse underscores that our ultimate purpose is to honor and worship God, not the gifts He provides.

Spiritual gifts are expressions of God’s grace and are intended to serve the community and worship Him. When we use these gifts in alignment with His will, we find fulfillment and purpose. But when the gifts become the focus, they lose meaning, and our spiritual lives may feel hollow and unbalanced.
The Danger of Misplaced Focus
When we prioritize gifts over the Giver, it can lead to unhealthy dynamics within communities, where gifts are emphasized over the fruits of the Spirit. Jesus warns in Matthew 7 that we are recognized by our fruits, not our gifts. Focusing on gifts alone risks a superficial faith that lacks true substance.
By shifting our focus back to God and valuing our relationship with Him over the gifts, we rediscover the deeper purpose and fulfillment we were meant for in our spiritual journey. True contentment comes not from exalting our gifts but from knowing and honoring the One who gave them.
